About the role
Shopify’s growing rapidly around the world and we have a new opportunity for an experienced and dynamic Communications Manager in Japan to join our international team.
This role will lead integrated communication efforts focused on merchant profiling, executive thought leadership and creative storytelling to position Shopify as Japan’s default commerce platform for small businesses to large-scale enterprises.
The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional revenue and marketing teams, and have demonstrated experience driving proactive communication outcomes across product, corporate and thought leadership disciplines. This role reports to the PR & Communications Director (APAC).
Lead the delivery of a long-term communications strategy to build awareness of Shopify's presence, product offering and investment in Japan
Deliver senior counsel to Japan’s Country Director and cross-functional partners across a broad set of communications disciplines
Drive business and trade media outcomes around partnership and product announcements, merchant case studies, trends-based thought leadership and corporate storytelling
Lead the creation of Shopify’s narrative and messaging for Japan, including the development of briefing materials, press materials, bylines, blog posts, opinion statements and social content
Identify and deliver creative local campaigns that drive high quality earned media results and buzz among key audiences
Manage a local agency, including oversight of the PR program, budgets and performance metrics
10+ years’ B2B communications experience across corporate, product and thought leadership disciplines
Communications experience in retail and technology sectors with a strong network of top tier media contacts and track record of building and executing targeted communication strategies
Native Japanese speaker with exceptional verbal and written communication skills in English and Japanese
Creative storyteller with a strong instinct for identifying news angles and emerging themes that Shopify can own in Japan
Ability to work and collaborate in a fast-paced, dynamic and deadline-driven environment, with excellent judgment and negotiation skills
