We all have some sort of morning ritual. Whether if it’s responding to emails, exercising, planning your day, or sipping on a cup of coffee, these morning rituals are comforting and can help us stay productive. In fact, morning rituals are a huge part in determining the success of an entrepreneur. Without this consistency, I doubt that the following fifteen entrepreneurs would have become so successful.

1. Sir Richard Branson - Get Up Early

“Getting up and at it early gives me time to get on top of things, and chart my day effectively,” writes the Virgin Group Founder. He adds, “No matter where I am in the world, I try to routinely wake up at around 5am. By rising early, I’m able to do some exercise and spend time with my family, which puts me in a great mind frame before getting down to business.”

2. Mark Zuckerberg - Make as Few Decisions as Possible

Did you ever wonder why the Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg seems to often be wearing the same clothes? "I really want to clear my life to make it so that I have to make as few decisions as possible about anything except how to best serve this community," Zuckerberg told his audience during a 2014 public Q&A. He added, “I'm in this really lucky position, where I get to wake up every day and help serve more than a billion people. And I feel like I'm not doing my job if I spend any of my energy on things that are silly or frivolous about my life.”

3. Steve Jobs - Give Yourself a Pep Talk

During his iconic 2005 commencement address at Stanford, Jobs said;

For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been, “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

4. Bill Gates - Stay Sharp Mentally and Physically

The Microsoft co-founder is known for exercising both both his body and mind first thing in the morning. He reads publications like the Wall Street JournalEconomist, and New York Times, as well as gets alerts for stories on Berkshire Hathaway.

Gates also trots on his treadmill and watches courses from the Teaching Company.

5. Jack Dorsey - Meditate and Exercise

As CEO of both Twitter and Square, Jack Dorsey definitely has a full-schedule. However, he still finds time to meditate and exercise. During an AMA with Product Hunt, Dorsey claimed that his morning ritual consists of waking up at 5am, then he’ll “meditate for 30 minutes, do three 7 minute workouts, makes coffee, checks in...”

Dorsey also said that he gets the most out of his day by sleeping between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. and then meditating and exercising.

Dorsey also has mentioned that he tries to keep a fairly exact routine to keep himself consistent. He feels this has continued to help him through the years.

6. Arianna Huffington - Get Enough Sleep First

“I could not live without a good night’s sleep—because for the longest time I did live without it and paid a very high price,” Huffington says. However, once she is awake, her schedule could vary. For example, what time she wakes-up could differ based on whether she’s going to the office or airport.

For most mornings, Huffington rides an exercise bike for 30 minutes, meditates for another 30, takes a shower, gets dressed, and has a cup of coffee.

7. Elon Musk - Make Time for the Small Things

Musk has claimed that he works an insane 80-100 hours per week! But, that doesn’t prevent him from waking up at 7am to catch a spectacular view outside of his L.A. area home. Musk normally skips breakfast, but sometimes has an omelette or cup of coffee, and arrives at his SpaceX office before 10am. Once in the office, he makes his morning phone calls to journalists, job candidates, and conference calls regarding either SpaceX or Tesla.

8. Tim Ferriss - Make the Bed

Self-help guru and author of the 4-Hour Workweek has a five-step morning ritual that helps him stay on top of his game. This includes;

  • Making your bed - it’s a little action that puts you in control and makes you proud.
  • Meditate.
  • Hang. Yes, hang so that you can decompress your spine.
  • Drink tea.
  • Write in a journal.

After completing these five tasks, Tim is ready to start his day and start helping others improve their lives.

9. Jeff Bezos - Avoid Early Morning Meetings

Instead of rushing to the office, the Amazon founder prefers to have a leisurely breakfast with his wife and children. "I wanted her to get the best hours of my day," Bezos has said. That’s why Bezos made it a point to not plan any early-morning meetings. This not only keeps a healthy work-life balance, it also ensures that you get a full night’s rest and decreases stress.

10. Dave Gilboa - Get the Blood Flowing

Gilboa, founder of the eyewear company Warby Parker, admits that he’s not exactly a morning person. "I'm usually a little groggy in the morning, but I find that anytime I exercise to get the blood flowing, I have more energy throughout the day. So I've been riding my bike to work, even in the winter."

Gilboa makes it a point to be in the office by 8am and has found that his brain has been “woken up” by the bike ride.
