Alibaba has reportedly begun its journey into the virtual reality space. Their goal is to use virtual reality to give its customers a more immersive shopping experience.
According to TechCrunch, GnomeMagic Lab will be working with Alibaba to integrate virtual reality into the ecommerce experience while exploring other applications, such as video and entertainment via Alibaba Pictures.
Alibaba isn't the only company looking to get in the virtual reality space – Facebook acquired Oculus for $2 billion in 2014. "We’re looking forward to an exciting future together, building the next computing platform and reimagining the way people communicate,” the companies said in a joint statement.
Former Facebook engineer Zhao Haiping – who is now on Alibaba’s GnomeMagic Lab team, believes virtual reality could help enable customers shop virtually on New York’s Fifth Avenue from the comfort of their own home.
