Jackalope Trading Co.

About a year ago, a couple things happened to me. One, I learned to ride a motorcycle. Two, I lost my stepfather to cancer. Well, my stepfather used to deal in Old Pawn Native American jewelry - gorgeous turquoise and silver. I noticed how popular it was with all of the girls in the motorcycle world.

Since I had just inherited an amazing collection, I decided it was time to continue his legacy. So I sell his jewelry, along with what I had been doing all along - buying vintage items. I started as a kid, and had always bought awesome stuff for myself and my friends. So now I get to do what I love - shop! And have my own business at the same time.

How did you earn your first sales? Which channels are now generating the most traffic and sales for you?

My first sales actually came at a party at my house - I showed off some of my inherited jewelry to some friends, and made a couple hundred bucks that night! Now, most of my business comes on Shopify, and pop up shops and motorcycle events.

Tell us about the back-end of your business. What tools and apps do you use to run your store? How do you handle shipping and fulfillment?

To run my shop, I use Shopify, and Shopify POS. I keep everything catalogued through the POS system, with a picture and description. This allows me to have help when I do events, and I don't ever have to worry about sales getting lost in the shuffle.

I usually ship USPS, just depending on the items. I do my best to get items out the same day or the next day.. Because I know how anxious I am when waiting for packages!

What are your top recommendations for new ecommerce entrepreneurs?

My reccomendations for new shop owners - get a POS system! It's easy to get things lost in the shuffle. With everything catalogued, it's so much easier. And with shopify, it automatically marks your items sold on your website.

Do everything you can to promote yourself - cards, stickers, social networking.. Everything helps. A lot of my sales come from my social networking sites - I post pictures of my newest items and direct them to my site.
